It is worth remembering that not only is getting on the wait list a grueling process that requires tremendous fortitude, but in many ways, the long wait afterwards is equally taxing. The average wait time for a kidney transplant in Michigan is around 4 years. The way that our patients face this continues to amaze. The long years on the wait list are filled with many trials and tribulations, often with health issues arising prompting periods of being placed on hold; plus, the anxieties and worries that go along with these periods of uncertainties. Patience is defined as the capacity to accept or tolerate delays, problems or suffering; and the stoic philosophers teach us that a person who is the master of patience is master of everything else. And our Kidney Companions, by living this patience, teach us the truth of this pithy aphorism. As we take this journey with our Kidney Companions, it is worth observing the courage, strength of mind, and resilience with which our companions patiently wait.
