As summer approaches and the weather turns, let's take time to recount and iterate just how important exercise training is for people living with kidney disease. Kidney transplant centers are increasingly focusing on the topic of 'pre-habilitation' for potential kidney transplant recipients. Pre-habilitation refers to the process of enhancing patient functional capacity prior to a major physiological stressor, for example a major transplant surgery. Kidney transplant candidates may be uniquely suited for pre-habilitation as they experience profound muscle loss and declining functional capacity during the years on dialysis. Not surprisingly, studies consistently show that pre-operative functional status and strength are among the most important predictors of how well and quickly patients recover in the post-operative period. With this background in mind, Walking with Kidney Companions has officially launched weekly walks! We are meeting on Tuesday mornings at 9:15 and Wednesday mornings at 11:00 am each week. Location is in the Grand Traverse Commons in the Pavilions Circle (main entrance of Pavilions), directly off Medical Campus Drive. All paces and abilities welcome. Come join to enjoy socializing, exercise, good weather and good company, and please spread the word for anyone who may want to join! Email molly@kidneycompanions.org with any specific questions.
