Are your kidneys okay? Detect early, protect kidney health. The theme from this year's World Kidney Day (March 13th) campaign reminds us that kidney disease is often silent until very advanced stages, so detection through blood and urine testing is critical. The theme also stresses the importance of early detection. When detected early and managed aggressively, much of the consequences of kidney disease can be avoided. Lifestyle, diet, and advances in medical therapies have all proven to be effective in slowing down the progression of kidney disease. And as all of our volunteers have shown, advocating for kidney health and bringing awareness to the broader community is critical for stemming the tide of kidney disease. In more plaintive news, we lost one of our Kidney Companions this week. Jerry died at Munson Medical Center with his brother and nephews at his side; he fought a tough battle these last several months but died peacefully. We look back with pleasure at getting to know Jerry since his kidney transplant nearly 2 years ago, and we can perhaps take some consolation in knowing we formed all these new relationships and friendships with him. We are so grateful for all of you opening yourselves up and forming those lasting bonds we had with him.
